What is your first impression of life in the United States?
Welcome Students, I hope that you will post comment regularily on this blog. Please write about your first impressions of the United States and Salem State College.
Hello everyone! It was a pleasure meeting you all in yesterday's workshop class. I hope you enjoyed the "Getting to Know You" exercises. They really helped us instructors know more about your interests and needs. I look forward to teaching you all and showing you more facets of American culture. Well, I'm off to join you at the freshman orientation program on North campus! See you soon! Joni
Hi, Joni! Hi, Mary-Margaret! (Sorry if I make a wrong spelling of your name. I am not good at spelling.) Hi, everyone!
It was so happy to get the chance having workshop in US that I called my mum talking about the interesting activities I had done during the class for half an hour! After a period of “ice-breaker”, I felt easier to open my mouth speaking English! Yeah!! ^_^ A good beginning is half success!
The first impression of life in the United States is, for me simple and quiet. People here have simple breakfast, lunch, and even dinner, which is quite different from which in China. My mum often spend several hours preparing the food for whole family such as three dishes, a kind of soup as well as dessert. During the weekends, my mum makes dumplings, which even costs the whole morning to make it. As for quiet, America is so silent and peaceful that sometimes, especially at night, I feel a little bit afraid because there is not a single person walking around. Compared with China, the situation is just the opposite! Sometimes I may think, oh, can somebody give me a tiny space to let me breathe, while other times I like the Chinese “noise” cause it likes a party. ^_^
Salem state is a quiet and peaceful town. Everything looks so harmonious. No matter where we go, the people are very friendly to us and there always a kindly smile on their faces. This is the first impression I came to Salem State. After we arrival, the CIE staff arranged activities and classes for us. In this way, we stepped into the American life :)
Workshop is very helpful and interesting! I never had such experience of learning English before. We can communicate with teachers and go to ask what we don’t understand. In this class this morning, we talked about the impression of freshman orientation program. We show our opinions at different angles. I think this is a good way to encourage the students to think independently and become more creative :)
Food is one of the important things for the foreigners. American food is simple and easy to cook. Pizza, sandwich, mash potato, salad are the most popular food that American people frequently eat. I will get used to American life and study as soon as possible :)
